Fishing in Chocolate Milk

On Friday June 17th, I returned home at 8:30 pm from a business trip. Before I could get home, Jason called enticing me with a fishing trip with Mark to Lake Pontchartrain. I was not keen on fishing in Lake Pontchartrain because I figured the water would be muddy due to the spillway being open for weeks dumping all that fresh water into the Lake. However, the lure of a trip where I didn’t have to drive or captain the boat was too hard to pass up. So, I agreed to go.

This was going to be a quick no stress fishing trip. To that end, Jason picked me up about 5am. Then, we picked up Mark and his boat. We made the trip to the landing. At the landing, there were a few boats at the launch. We purchased some live bait. Then, we were off to fish the north side of the train trestle. The first thing we notice was the water was muddy, looked like chocolate milk, and rough. We knew this wasn’t going to be a good trip. As we pulled up to the north side of the trestle, there were 8 boats clustered close to the bank. We joined the group.

We anchored and started fishing. We were catching mostly small baby specks, small Crockers and Catfish. Ever so often, we would catch a keeper. After about 2 hours, we decided to venture more South. The water got rougher and muddier. But, we tried it anyway with the same results. Then, we decided to move to the Hwy 11 Bridge. The conditions were the same. We did catch a couple Reds and Sheepsheads. Once we ran out of live bait, we tried plastics for a while. Then, we called it a day around noon. We finished the day with two Reds, 2 Sheepsheads, and 6 Specks.

See a quick video of Mark’s Sheepshead.
